The science could not be clearer. To keep global heating within safer limits, the world cannot afford any new oil, methane gas, or coal extraction projects. In 2021, the International Energy Agency (IEA), a UN group known to be conservative on energy policy, concluded that achieving net zero emissions by 2050 means no new oil and methane gas fields, and no new coal mines or mine extensions. Yet governments continue to auction new extraction licences, approve pipelines, power plants, export terminals, and refineries, while fossil fuel companies push deeper into ever more fragile ecosystems. Every new fossil fuel project locks in decades of additional pollution and pushes humanity further towards climate breakdown.
That means every new fossil fuel project or block matters.
Every concession, pipeline, drilling campaign, and coal mine is another step away from a liveable future.
If governments and corporations refuse to prioritise our collective survival, then civil society must. That means communities, campaigners, journalists, scientists, and ordinary people standing together to oppose every new fossil fuel project before it becomes entrenched. The stakes are nothing less than survival, and the sooner dangerous projects are identified, exposed, and challenged, the greater our chances of stopping them.
As part of this movement, we (LINGO) have developed this “early warning” system to help people fight for their communities and the planet. The sooner climate advocates can oppose a project or concession, the more likely they are to stop it.
